How can I improve my sleep with a new baby?
Having a baby can make getting enough sleep a challenge. It can take weeks or months for babies to adjust to a sleep routine or to start sleeping through the night. Changing hormone levels after giving birth can also disrupt your sleep for a period of time. For some women, severe fluctuations in hormone levels during and after pregnancy can cause a mental health condition called postpartum depression. Postpartum depression can also cause sleep problems.
If you have a new baby, here are some ways to get more rest or get help:
- Sleep when the baby sleeps.
- Don’t try to do too much or do everything yourself. Ask your partner, family and friends for help.
- Get a partner, friend or other caregiver to help take care of your baby for a while so you can sleep.
- Talk to other mothers so you can learn from their experiences.
- Join a support group for new mothers. Ask your doctor, nurse or midwife about groups in your area.
- If you go back to work after the birth, ask your employer if you can work part-time or reduced hours first.
If you continue to have trouble sleeping, or if you think you are depressed, talk to your doctor, nurse or midwife.
