After cataract surgery, it is important to have regular dilated eye examinations. This is the best way to check the health of your eyes. It will help you maintain good vision. Schedule an eye exam at least once a year or as directed by your eye care provider.
Wear sunglasses and a hat with a shade when outdoors. Stop smoking if you smoke. Stay away from passive smoking. Follow a healthy diet. Eat green leafy vegetables and foods such as salmon that are high in antioxidants.

New glasses
Your vision will be better after surgery. But you may need new glasses to fine-tune your vision. Your eye doctor will test your vision while you heal. You will be given a new prescription for glasses, if necessary, when you are completely healthy. Many people may only need simple prescription reading glasses after surgery.
Treatment of secondary cataracts
Months or years after surgery, a secondary cataract may form. It is caused by cells growing between your new lens and the capsule that holds it. It is not painful. But it can cause vision problems similar to the first cataract. Examples are blurred vision or increased glare from light. In most cases, a secondary cataract can be treated in your eye care provider’s office or at an outpatient surgery center.
For this, laser treatment (YAG capsulotomy) can be used. It is a painless procedure. It only takes a few minutes. Your pupil is dilated and a laser beam is used to make an opening in the capsule that holds the new lens. This allows more light to enter. It will improve your vision immediately.
